Seems as good a time as any to post one of my favorite photos. |

One of mine, below. It is Gare Montparnasse in Paris. A large print of this hangs in my billiard room, and was acquired when my wife and I were in Florence on our honeymoon. The date of this accident is one day short of 100 years before our wedding date. These type of things represent pretty dramatic oversights. ...to go where no man has gone before; not with a train anyway. |

Wow! That's a great photograph, Cliff. How'd they get the train upstairs? Here's another in Washington, DC. Not a great photograph, but then the scene wasn't all that photogenic, with the GG1 having broken past the deadheads at the end of the tracks, entered the waiting room, and then fallen through the floor to the baggage room below. This was just days before the Inauguration in '53. Huge volumes of passenger traffic would be passing through the station, and so the cars were removed and the engine was left in the basement, and a false floor built over the top of it, that served until the Inauguration festivities were completed. The series of incidents that led up to the accident requires a flow chart to follow, but this is how it ended. Incredibly, no one was killed. |

“For nearly a hundred years, the rail industry had virtually owned the trans-continental travel market, and the prospect of serious competition was never considered. Now, rail industry attempts to compete with the emergence of air travel were often ill-conceived and met with limited success.” |
