A while back I had built a second prototype kick drum mic mount for the 18” bubinga Designers, and forgot to take photos of it before the drum was re-assembled. At the time, it was built to accommodate an AKG D112, my kick mic of choice for use outside of the drum, in front of the resonant head, and the only extra kick mic I had around at the time. A little while ago, I picked up a couple of Audix D6’s from Kelly (thanks Kelly). D6 is not my favorite kick mic, due to their inherent tailoring, but since the intent with the inside mic is only to augment the external mic with additional attack and punch, the inherent tailoring of the D6 works fine as an inside mic, for my purposes.
Today being one of those 100 plus degree days that is better suited to indoor projects, it was my opportunity to replace the internal D112 with a D6, and make the D112 available for external use.
Since the D112 is mounted at a 90 angle and the D6 is not, replacement of the mic mounting block had to be made, but that’s ok, because the garage is air conditioned, too.
The new D6 version looks like this, and seems to have worked out pretty well.
