H4n and RECORDING PROJECT

Kelly wrote - Seems the easiest thing to do to get us started is a "drum song" each of us can add a part to. We would only need our acoustic kit and a recorder. I am about to buy a H4n which I could pass along so we aren't all buying one. This way, if we kinda all use it in a similar fashion we will have something with some continuity. The recorder itself would be carring the previous recordings you could just add to. Seems the thing can edit and all that and when we are done and like it, I think the recorder itself also has mixdown capabilities.

H4n divides each startup of the recorder into a new file, one following the other, under a single folder.

Don't think it can mixdown or edit. Software (Cubase) for mixing comes with the unit, but not in the unit.

There is some danger, if not acquainted with the user interface, that files may be deleted when attempting to erase our own files thinking to get a better version.

Sending the recorder around containing previous files is a good idea, but the most dependable result may come from each person shipping their own chosen file to a central location, where it can be spliced into a whole.

See why I don't head these projects :)

Okay...working on it.
Now...I'm not thinking put all your drumming abilities into a verse and passing it along. I'm thinking more like this for example: If it starts with a single kick stroke for a whole measure or two...the next guys uses it as a foundation...continues with it, adds to it and so on. Am I making sense? I never do to me.

The end product being a single, unified drum track with contributions from multiple members? Is this what you're saying?

Ideas fine, just not the ability to merge files as we go. Another possible scenario, but one that could be adapted to the "single kick" starter method:

1. Set metronome speed and recording levels. Metronome is in the unit, so it will be constant.

2. Record beginning, say eight to sixteen bars.

3. Post file, along with speed and levels.

4. Next guy makes eight to sixteen more bars, sends his file in, and so on down the line.

5. Each new file is spliced, and the entire song to date is reposted as a whole, so anyone downline can hear the entirety, using it to guide the new verse.

If enjoyed, the process could go on more or less indefinitely.

Spill it Mike. I'm still going to do the drum-less tracks, is that what you mean?

Yep Kel. However I was thinking that we were each going to do an entire tune and then compare, but I like this idea much better! Especially how we could keep going on and on. Nice!

I'm ready...where's the recorder? LOL

I dug out some tracks. I'll be working on sound, finding the best way to get a good mix.
Stay tuned I'll be on that part of it.
Do you want me to send you the H2 to mess around with until I the H4 gets here?

H2 has been claimed. It's headed to Croyd.

H2 will have slightly less brilliance (treble) than the H4.

Wow...that was fast. LOL

Kelly, are you thinking of selling it or are you keeping it?

Mike it was giving to me by Greg. I am giving it to Ron who just wants to experiment with it.
If you really are going to go after one, get the new H4. Seems to be worth the extra money.
I'm wanting it for the external mic's, which is reason enough for me. But sure seems to be a great improvement over the H2. If you don't want to buy one, hold up, I will pass you mine but of course you would have to wait a lil bit.

Oh...and I really should mention he is sending me a tom I need so we are really trading. I certainly would have given it to him though. It was given to me.

No worries, Kel! I'll get a chance to try the H4 when we do this recording, so I'll know if I like it or not when I'm ready to spring for one.

Mike,
Honestly if you want the H2 you can have it. I was actually trying to give you dibs. Kelly, wouldn't just take the tom.
I,too, was thinking of getting an H4n. I'm still working on my set up- tuning, head choice etc. and I'm still a long way from recording.

Ron, thanks but that's okay. I'll get a chance to play with the H4 when Kelly passes it around and take some time to decide if I like it.

What kind of tom?
