I've been checking out self-made videos from musicians recorded on this product (Zoom Q3 HD) and, wow...it seems like a great device to quickly record ideas on.

Obviously, you wouldn't expect to record an album with this but for practice sessions or to self-critique, it seems very handy. In all honesty, the HD video capabilities don't really concern me (I'm not looking to be the next youtube sensation). The audio is where my focus lies and, to me, it seems like it has acceptable sound in/output. The only example of a product that I thought did a "higher quality" job was some kind of Canon camera which I believe costs a bit more.

Thoughts? Any current Zoom HD users?

Using audio only, ZOOM H4. Good audio for just what you describe. I don't use it very much because I don't enjoy the mechanics of recording, but I can vouch that, with a little work, you can good remarkably clean sound. Only audio problem I've encountered is that I could get either good bass sound (from in front of the kit) or good floor toms (from behind the kit), but not both at once from any position. On the H4, at least, auxiliary mics can be added without cutting out the built-ins, so the fix is easy enough.

Hey Justin,

I have no experience using any of the Zoom products, but Gunnar sent me some output from his Q3, and it was pretty decent, both audio and video, for a simple working tool. Not sure if they get beyond 'documentary' quailty, but they seem pretty handy for that.

I think Greg has one of their audio only products, and may have done some sound clips at one time.
:? ;)

Edit: Apparently Greg types faster than me.

Do you have any clips from the H4, Greg?

I'm going to get the Zoom Q3 HD at the end of this year. But I'm not going to use the mics that come with it, I'm going to use my studio for the audio portion. I don't like the audio on the Q3.

I've been planning on getting one for awhile. Looking forward to it.

I got one, very nice. I use it to record myself at bandrehearsals. Often an eyeopener to watch yourself play. I like the machine, handy, small, good audio and video quality.
