For a variety of reasons, I recently undertook a complete rebuild of my studio machine, including operating system, recording software, upgraded digital/analog converter interface card, second video card and dual monitors, and all the trauma that goes with similar cliff-diving experiences.

Overall, a less painful experience than had been allowed for, but not without obstacles here and there. The most significant obstacle has been re-learning to navigate in Sonar X1 vs. previously installed Sonar 7. Sure there are more features, but where the !@#$ are the old ones?! :? :evil:

Existing templates and projects open seamlessly, except in cases where a particular plug-in from Sonar 7 has been replaced with something different, in which case, you are warned with a list of the plug-ins that are being ignored, but retained, in case you do want to open the project in the earlier version.

Yesterday I got to the point where I could just ‘roll tape’ and pay for a little while as a system/sound check. This sample is way too long, and I will edit it down or replace it, but I was just happy to be up and working again. ;)

The results sound great, and lots of interesting exploration going on in that clip, Cliff.

What you wrote is further proof that one English speaking guy can speak it while another English speaking guy has no idea what he just said.

Only one thing:

Originally listening without headphones (laptop speakerlets), the hihat was jarring. Listening on headphones, it sat in better but still had an odd presence, as if the mics are picking up compressed air puffs more than crispness. See what you think.

The snare sounds great, the 12 and 14 sound great. The bass is really out of my headphone range (as we have confirmed on other recordings), and the 16 may be also. It sounds a bit soft next to the 14. Cymbal sound is excellent, particularly like the splash. It has a wonderful decay.

Actually, I like the recording very much... It's full of aliveness and expression Cliff - personally I wouldn't change a thing...

Congratulations on the new sound setup - are these the JDs or the DIRILs?!?

Greg,

I'll look into the high hat observation. I had recently re-positioned it slightly to try to eliminate a lot of bleed (it was acting like a third overhead), and the could be something there, or it could be a mix issue. Thanks for the observation.

It is the Dirils that you are hearing on this clip. Thanks for the comments, and critical observations are truely welcome. I cut and listened to so many takes yesterday while sorting things out that I went past objectivity.

All the more reason I don't use software for recording. I get pissed off too fast when I work with software.
Your recording sounds fine, I can't hear the bass drum, and 1 of your floor toms has a BOOUUUU kind of decay. Maybe that's the sound you want.
It sounds like you are using some EQ.

For frame of reference in regards to the kick drum, what are you listening on?

Not much EQ applied. Little usual kick carve out; 3dB off the toms at 12kHz.

Personally, I like what I hear very much...

The sound is so You Cliff - so I guess it felt very natural to hear You sound like this!!!

I have budget Philips speakers (SBC HP250) on a SB Live! pc-audio card...
