A while back I had built a second prototype kick drum mic mount for the 18” bubinga Designers, and forgot to take photos of it before the drum was re-assembled. At the time, it was built to accommodate an AKG D112, my kick mic of choice for use outside of the drum, in front of the resonant head, and the only extra kick mic I had around at the time. See below:

A little while ago, I picked up a couple of Audix D6’s from Kelly (thanks Kelly). D6 is not my favorite kick mic, due to their inherent tailoring, but since the intent with the inside mic is only to augment the external mic with additional attack and punch, the inherent tailoring of the D6 works fine as an inside mic, for my purposes.

Today being one of those 100 plus degree days that is better suited to indoor projects, it was my opportunity to replace the internal D112 with a D6, and make the D112 available for external use.

Since the D112 is mounted at a 90 angle and the D6 is not, replacement of the mic mounting block had to be made, but that’s ok, because the garage is air conditioned, too. ;)

The new D6 version looks like this, and seems to have worked out pretty well. ;)

Excellent job Cliff...

The idea of using a rail, so You can put the mic in the most desired position, is fantastic.
I see from the design that You can also replace the rod that holds the mic, with a longer/shorter one, if needed, right?!?

A truly genius concept - and a very neat work, I must say...

Did You do the part fabrication by yourself Cliff?!?

Hey Goki,

Yes, the rod that holds the mic is changeable, if needed, but the mic mounting blocks were designed so that the rod is offset to the side, and the bore can go all the way through the block, allowing unlimited height adjustment.

The main rod (that the mic can slide forward and backwards on) is isolated from the mounting brackets (and hence, from the shell also) with rubber bushings, and the brackets themselves have rubber insulators between them and the shell.

No holes drilled, uses the existing lug screws.

Fabrication is done in my shop in the garage.

I'll be impressed when remote servos can drive the microphone in two planes, in order to find the best adjustment point while playing. :D :D :D

Kidding aside, nice work, Cliff. I haven't reached a point where I've thought much about loading the Designer, but that's probably the solution to everything I've been trying to get it to do with heads. :lol: :lol: :lol:

I think I could work out external adjustability on one plane (front to back) without too much difficulty.

Two plane adjustability currently requires a 24" kick drum, a trained monkey, and some additional logistical considerations.
:? :lol:

The monkey requires at least two feet of headroom!

In fact, I don't think off center placement requires brain laser precision. But fore and aft placement would be very nice indeed.

Does anyone have an idea to mount a Shure Beta91 like this in a bassdrum?

Hey Rob,

* how is the mic to be oriented, relative to the batter head?
* what are the dimensions of the mic?
* how sensitive is it to placement?
* what size kick drum?
* how many lugs?

Using an EVANS pillow would be enough - just place it on top of the pillow...

That's the whole idea of the design of this mic - to lay it down in the bass drum. I doubt You'll be able to fix it (not to remove it after gig)...

For permanent mounting, I'd be thinking Velcro on an isolated platform; but as Goki says, it's not designed for mounts.
