So, I was fortunate enough to pick up a perfect Zoom H4 audio recording on craigslist for $50 a few weeks ago. I haven't had the time to take it out and play with it yet but my band and I are jamming tomorrow and trying it out.

Any suggestions/hints on using or placing the device for recording?

First, great buy! Second, if the remote did not come with it, buy one. Aside from the slightly annoying wire that connects the remote to the recorder, you'll find that the buttons on the remote are obvious and more intuitive than the controls (good as they are) on the recorder, and gives vastly better control than allowing the recorder to start and stop itself automatically. Less monkeying with the recorder allows more relaxed attention to the music.

Placement is sort of obvious and you can play with it in terms of balance, but I would certainly position it at a height at least above the horizontal line of cymbals. I keep mine about 5.5' from the floor.

Turn off all filters and effects, use the stereo (not 4-way) and be sure to turn recording gain down considerably. Digital distortion is an awful noise, and it will announce itself uncompromisingly! That 's about it. Good luck!

If you find a better way to use it, let me know. :D :D

Greg,

Thanks for the tips!!! I actually left the device with my bass player (since he's also a sound/light tech) so he's been tinkering around with it.

I'm actually on the way to practice so I'll pass on this knowledge...hopefully we'll have some recordings to put up on here soon!

I know...I keep looking for another one around the same price to round out our recording area but I just can't find anything close.

I think I found the deal of year! haha
