Hey Nick,

I have heard some that friends have, but never lived with any myself.

I was considering going down that path just before Goki steered me to Ibrahim Diril.

I would still like to try some, if I got the chance to pick them.

Greg this one makes a crashing sound :D
I was thinking of taking a holiday out to Italy this year all being well so may stop by their factory as it appears to be near Florence, maybe see if they have one of those old Chinas...may try one of those extra dry crashes if I see one for the right price...

at last picked up some of these DeJohnette original hihats... incredible stick and foot definition, and will definitely take some experimentation...have set them opposite the Meinl extra drys to capture two extremes; defined and dry/trashy. They work really well with the DeJohnette ride!

Glad you finally found a set, Nick.

They have a great sound, but need to be played a bit louder than I do sometimes, to open up.

Where that volume is ok, they are great.

Enjoy.
;)

Ha ha Greg, they are carpet underlay squares which control the frequencies a bit, unfortunately the colour was not an option..I think it's called vomit green.
Cliff, yeah it took some time..in the end got them from a guy in LA Hazelshould.com he gets some great gear and I can recommend him highly excellent fast service. I'm definitely having fun getting used to them, what with them having no real sizzle to speak of ;)

I can sort of guess what the Meinl might sound like but not the DJs; are you defining Meinls as "dry/trashy" compared to the DJs as "defined," with "no sizzle"? Are all those cymbals a good match for Lites?

I found that Classix liked cymbals which were fuller with more was, while the Designers love dry and/or trashy. But the real test of cymbals does not seem to be the drum set alone, but rather the musical situation.

the DeJohnette cymbals are heavy with excellent stick clarity and short sustain, if you play one cymbal you get a reasonable bell like tone, pretty pure. The Meinls are definitely trashy.
I find the Lites work with most sounds depending on the tuning (and musical situation as you say) they're tuned higher at the moment which suits these heads, although I don't like the bass drum going up too high - it is a bass drum after all.
