I got a new Ride
. Bosphorus Versa 20, 2450gms.
I've been checking these out online, and I'd convinced myself
that one of these would be perfect for a specific task.
It will replace my K Custom Hybrid 20, which, worked, but was never what I really wanted.
I wanted a Ride that was kinda Dark/Dry, broad stick definition, with a nice wash for slower more spacious playing. I also wanted a Thinner, Darker, Bell, so you can shoulder it, without ripping your ears off. And, if she was crashable, well, you know, the PERFECT, allusive ,never be found, never been made, Ride Cymbal.
The K, on paper, would do all of these things, Dry from mid bow to (including) Bell, washy closer to the edge, and a very nice Crash too. Remarkable really, the Cymbal is very versatile, BUT!, The cymbal just isn't very nice, not sweet sounding at all, I love the way she responds, everything she does is great, but she needs to sound less like a Garbage Can Lid
, and have that sweet/soft wash with broad Semi Dry definition
, Blah Blah Blah..so on.....Don't get me wrong, I love Turkish Cymbals, Love Trashy dark crashes, but theres Trash and theres Trash.
So, the Versa is definitely not as nice a crash as the K, but this is the least important factor in my choice of Ride cymbal. The Bell is quite thin for 2450gm 20'cymbal, and she is unlathed from Mid Bow to/including Bell, so shes a little darker and soft/sweet compared to the Garbage Can Lid K. She should crash reasonably by shouldering the bow at higher volumes, and my 18' Bos Trad is right there for softer stuff.
Anyways, gets to use her for the first time with the band at rehearsals today (3/4 of the band
), and see how she goes, I want her to work, because the price I can get her for is ridiculously good, RRP-30%-50% = around $200Au.
There will be updates for those interested
Cheers
