I'd love to see a photo of your intenal bass drum mic set up Cliff. As always, I can never get tired of looking at your kit.

I love your drums... Being only 5'8" tall, a twenty inch bass drum is probably the only way I could play a Signature kit.

Greg,

Below is a photo of the internal mic in the 20" Designer kick. I forgot to take photos of the mount in the 18" Designer.

The Signature 18" & 20" do not have internal mics.

This is very much a prototype design; the mount in the 18" is for an AKG D112, and is a bit more streamlined and sophisticated. I'll get a photo when I get a chance.

Y'know, I forgot you did that, and I was trying to figure out if that was a twelve or ten inch tom in your photo. I've got an extra 13" CL Lite tom that I specifically bought to have cut down, but I don't currently have the $ (and, perhaps the balls!) to get it done. I've become a bit gun shy about vendors, as I have been totally screwed by a couple of them who completely f'd up some things on my '64 1/2 Mustang. Of course, everything can be remedied, but I have to either pay to have it done right, or do it myself!
So, who did your tom, and how was it accomplished, and are you happy with the results?

I had it cut down at Precision Drum in New York.

To get to 12x10, 1 15/16 was cut off the bottom. Use the old upper lug mount holes as the new lower holes, and cut off just above the old lower holes. This will be exactly 1 15/16 of material removed.

Mark and drill new upper lug mount holes for the reso side lugs.

To finish, I took a 1/16" cut off the top to freshen the bearing edge. The drum is now 12x10, and perfectly symmetrical, except for repositioning the badge, which I have not done.

I took the drum there myself, and participated in the process. I am very pleased with both the work and with the effect on the drum. It is more reponsive, less 'booming', and produces better ergonomics.

Hey Jeff,

I like the D6 for how I am using it, but I have not liked it as much in situation where it is the only kick mic.

I use it internally on the batter, in conjunction with an external D112 on an unported reso head.

Using an D112 alone (on an unported head) delivers the open, resonant sound, but lacks a bit of attack. Since the D6 is (I think) designed to feature attack (boosted low & high, scooped mid range), it does what I want from the internal mic, when I mix it in at lower gain, so that I get a bit of attack blended with the open, resonant sound from the external D112.

The D6 alone is probably a very good rock kick mic, but does not work well, by itself for me.
