Do any of you guys play stuff like this? My brains fall out of my head every time I try it. I'm glad I learned paradiddles when I was a kid!

Still, the effect is fantastic, and none of the moves he's making could be easily done with a double stroke roll. I find my inability exceptionally frustrating.

Steve Gadd plays this lick all the time. You're probably over thinking it. Here's an easy way to approach it: If you take the doubles out if it it's just simple alternate sticking R-L-R-L (1-e-+-a). Play the first and last 16th notes on the toms and the middle two 16th notes on the snare (tom-snare-snare-tom). Get comfortable with that first. Then just play doubles instead of singles for the middle two 16th notes on the snare drum. And you've got it!

Hope this didn't make your hair hurt. Mine's all gone BTW! ;)

I think what makes this a little difficult to grasp from the explanation given is that it is 16th note triplets being played, and not 16th notes.

Combine that with David's suggestion for relating it to single strokes, and it looks pretty clear.

More often than not, I play 16th triplets as all doubles, but breaking it up this way does definitely create some different accent opportunities.

I'm amazed that in 50 years of drumming life I have never bumped into it. I get that it's sextuplets; that why it's attractive and useful. I'm almost down with double stroke sixteenth triplet rolls… mostly. These are more natural in feel because the beat repeats on the same hand, but the execution of the single-double-double-single thing only works until my brain gets involved, and then….

David, you were right about the over thinking.

I've been using the figure but didn't know it, because it goes by so fast I never could analyze what I was doing. I have been using it for the purpose of striking the toms on the beat while playing sixteenth triplets, or any other configuration where I wanted that kind of stutter beat.

But now that I know what it is, I will find all sorts of use for it! :D :D :D
