Cabot Tung Oil Finish, which has no tung oil in it.

Dunno. Likely a similar kind of finish. I wouldn't use it on drums, however, unless I wanted them to appear unfinished. "Unfinished," by which I mean no perceptible layer of finish over the wood, is what the word "Scandinavian" in the name is meant to suggest.

Sonor finishes never really looked like an oil or oil stain finish, even though I recall some character on the sonormuseum insisting that someone at the factory had told him that they used tung oil. Baloney.

Sonor low gloss finishes have some gloss, and they have a perceptible thickness, albeit not very much. They do not resemble oiled wood.

Anyway, it depends on what you want your drums to look like. The Watson stuff says you can build it into a gloss. I found that type of finish to build rather too quickly for my tastes. Shellac is more controllable.

I thought the description sounded pretty much exactly like what I'm looking for.
Quote
"A clear blend of penetrating oils and resins that can be applied to raw timber to highlight the natural grain and colour. When applied to the surface it rejuvenates the timber and removes any accumulated scratches and blemishes.
With a satin lustre that can be built to gloss with additional coats, Scandinavian Oil provides a natural finish to timber with a light film build."

I'm not necessarily looking for the original Sonor style finish, I want the marbling and character in the grain to pop, and an almost Antique hand rubbed finish would be awesome.

I like the idea of Shellac, but I don't want the light shades to get to red, or dark.
I'd like to keep the contrast, much more visible from a distance than my Sigs, or even the Schlebony SClassix.

Then use clear flakes. Believe me, you will build shellac so slowly that you can decide on the level of color as you go along.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Gregory.
I think I'll be trying Shellac, perhaps this stuff. The more I think about it, a touch more Amber would look incredible.

Thanks again. :D

More than welcome, Jeff. I cannot agree with you enough about the added amber. Makes the lights stripes in makassar glow.

The process is also fun, unlike so much finishing. I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience and seeing the results!

What is your favorite way to apply the Shellac?
