Brian, I'm 5' 8" too, and although my kit isn't a Signature, my toms are all square.With my drum rack, I have no problem with them at all, logistically. Oh, and FWIW, at the "keebler elf" height of 5'8" :lol: :lol: :lol: , I used to play a Sig kit with a 24" kick. So, IMHO, it can be done. :lol:

Cliff, I am debating not mounting an internal mic in the Designer, but would like to be able to add bass spread to a room... and of course don't want to open a port. Attack can be readily achieved by hitting harder, but the sound I am striving for is the low tones that meld with instrumentation.

I guess I'm hoping for encouraging thoughts on not mounting an internal mic... :lol: :|

Any time I have added a mic to the set-up it has been to solve a specific problem or to produce a specific result. The internal mic in the 18" Designer was added specifically in response to observations by you and Goki that, in your words "...The overall sound is a bit soft, but pushed, and there are a few sections where the subs are really sent into overdrive. I think it could a bit more attack and slightly less reso. The current effect is what it sounds like at the wrong end of an event... if you hear what I mean."

For sure, "...Attack can be readily achieved by hitting harder...", but along with that, (all else equal) so increases the level of resonance, if miced only from the reso head. My intent with two mics is to introduce more attack, without overall increase in kick drum volume, and to be able to vary the mix of both within a constant overall kick drum volume. There is probably more than one way to achieve this, but this is working for me.

The only encouraging thought I can offer is 'try it with just an external mic on the unported head and see what your observations are'. I have never worked with a 22" kick, and don't know what you can expect.

I had an eighties double 24" kick Ludwig classic kit with 12", 13", 14", 15" Power toms and two floor toms. I played it for 8 years.
On my small Lite kit (13, 16, 18, 24), I use the one up/two down configuration. On my large Lite kit (8, 10, 12, 15FT, 18FT, 2-22BDs), I was using the spare 13, but the four rack setup just looked very dated to me, and by removing it, I was able to lower the kit a bit.

Cliff, thaks posting the picture of your bass drum internal mic and mount. Only you could come up with such a great invention. :)
