Well, since the underlying theme of this whole veneer thing is really about how dirty Sonor played,
it reminds me still how they have stuff made in China and keep "Made in Germany" on the badge.
Like the SClass Pro thing, they switched in the middle of production and kept the badge the same.
All SClass Pro drums say "Made in Germany", which always leaves me asking "what way is the grain running"
Shitty if you ask me, In my best English accent, poppy cock, complete rubbish.

Refraction of light.

Two photos of the same spot on my 18 Designer, taken from opposite ends of the drum. This is typical of wood veneers, that when you change your location the lights flip flop. In the first photo, the area on the far side of the book match is dark It's not in shadow. In the second photo, the lights have shifted.

This is because, at the book match, the veneers are flipped. The first sheet is laid down one way, and the next is laid down flipped over, so the fibers are oriented in reverse of the first. The light reflects, by and large, in the opposite way from each other. What reflects light on one side refracts it in some other direction on the other. Won't find much of that in engineered veneers.

And man, check out those longitudinal grooves that show up in reflected light in the second picture.

The rosewood is remarkable. And care was taken to center the veneer joint right at the top center of the kick. Someone was not equally careful about how the hoops were placed... :P :) Beautiful chunk of lumber!

The rosewood is indeed breathtaking...

I love the "light" pattern on the scandi as well... :)

And this, from 2015 in Bad Berleburg. If I were shopping through catalogs, I'd be quite reassured to know that Sonor is still using exotic, naturally grown, unique-like-a-fingerprint veneers on its products. I realize the words "exotic" and "unique like a fingerprint" and "naturally grown" don't actually mean the damn thing grew like that on a tree.

Quote:
VVS (Vertical Veneer System)

SONOR was the first company to introduce and use spectacular vertical veneers on drums which has become
a trademark of the company since 1975. Vertical veneer means the veneer‘s grain is pointing from head to head on the drum, not surrounding the drum which would be called a horizontal veneer grain pattern. Unlike a horizontal grain, a vertical grain requires even more knowledge and precision while choosing and setting the veneer pieces together. SONOR prouds itself as one of the rare masters when it comes to using vertical veneer pattern on drums! Wood is a naturally grown product, diverse and unique in its pattern and beauty. Vertical veneers are selected, set by hand, and matched for your drum in-house by master craftsmen. Each veneer sheet is one of a kind and makes each drum unique like a fingerprint.... SONOR is the only company able to offer exotic vertical veneers in the SQ2 custom line of drums also inside the shells (except for our Vintage shell construction).
