Wow. Your ears must be much better than mine. All those years I thought the guitar players were turning up to eleven because they were using earplugs; who knew it was the other way around? 
Speaking of late discoveries, thanks for the tip on those pinestripe heads. For all the years that I was searching for less 'whump' and more 'thud', I thought those black circles were just there to show the less experienced guys where the sweet spot was. Everyone looking for 'their sound' should be using these pinestripes. 
These !@#$ers are really strong, too. One of my 'signature things' has always been to leave my drumsticks standing up in the head dents during breaks, and I can not do that with these. I guess making sacrifices for the sound is what it is all about though, dude.
Gotta try these with birch shells.
