I hear your scruples about felt and bearing edges, but I don't think bearing edges are as all-fired important as some people make them out to be. If felt did the trick for me, it would be on the drum. I played Phonic Plus and Signature for years with felt strips as delivered.

It's kinda retro to use felts, now that no one else does. But they kill too much resonance for me. I've tried different weights, different widths, different tensions, but there's no getting past the fact that as a straight line traverses a circle, it's going to cut a fairly broad swath.

I agree with you on the two Fiberskyns (non PS3). That's bop tuning territory, cool enough if that's what you're trying to do but not what I'm looking for. I read a story written by a well known drummer who sat down behind Philly Joe Jones's kit and couldn't play it because the bass was so loud and open. When he watched Jones play it, he realized that he buried the beater almost every time, thus providing damping.

I use the beater a lot for damping these days. Since I am playing guitar/drums duo, the bass drum has got to be able to accomplish multiple tasks. In some circumstances it needs to fill a lot of low end space, and in other to have a tight sound. One more thing to think about, varying the pedal that way, but I need the range to make the music work.

About the felt strip/bearing edge. Just wanted to state quickly that it's not really the bearing edge I am worried about.
It's the head seating on it. The tuning keys do get a little weird where the felt is coming through.

Phonic Plus/Signature/felt strips.
Wow
