I noticed back when I had my classix that I was looking for a different cymbal sound as well, like some A's or that type. But I pretty much run all K's with a sabian AA ride in there for rock,I always have, and I have bright ones and dark ones for different styles of music.
I usually pick cymbals for the genre I'm playing, not the kit I'm playing. But I could definitely see your point with the birch kit.
I guess I wish I had more to say about it, but I don't have whole different sets of pies to work with.

Great thread.
K darks are phenominal cymbals (one of the best series ever IMO). But my brighter louder XTremes worked noticeably better on my SQ's.
I think it has little to do with shell material and more to do with kit sound; lets say thick shelled verses thin shelled. And perhaps power toms verses short toms.
I view it as an EQ thing. A "bright" verses "Dark" thing. The reason I say it's not so much shell material is because a 10 x 10 birch tom can sound lower in tone than a maple 10 x 8.
Thin shelled SClassix would seem to be much brighter than Designers.

Must say this crossed my mind.As there are could be so many contributing factors, its good to just hear possibilities/ideas ;) .
I've always played thicker shells, so the SClassix is a little foreign to me. I love playing her, but every time I jump back on one of my Beech kits, they play themself, they just feel like butter, effortless :D .
My old Sonic Plus 1 Birch was a great Rock kit to play (except for hardware  ), much fatter/thicker attack with thicker shells, not even nearly as musical or dynamic as the SClassix, but for what I was doing at the time, she worked well, very well I thought.
