They did a nice job of flattening and re-cutting the bevel. Put it back together on... Poing. Oh no, it still doesn't tune properly.
Get out the tape measure. Maybe as much as 1.5 mm out of round. Holy moly, is that normal?
Called the shop. According to them, "all drums are out of round. 1.5 mm shouldn't affect anything."
Okay... well, maybe not... the 8 and 10 Signatures were sure not even thinking about being round. No doubt why they stopped making a 6.
Start thinking about all that hardware on there. What does that damper do? Oh, it applies pressure to the lugs. Really?
Release the pressure on the damper, and sure enough it tunes differently. Still not right, but differently. A truly weird concept. Sure, corrupting the shell will corrupt the resonance.
So tune it as best I can, and the drum sounds wonderful. Don't know why, but at this point, I'm not about to complain!
