Kinda thuddy on toms, too, although I did not try to match resos to batters.

May not be so much of an issue, given the snare sound that I use most often.

Come on guys, I am trying to kid myself that I can find something else that I will like.

In that case, you need your Signature light snare back, with coated control dots on it.

Why not get an Ebony pinstripe then?!?

I must admit that the G Plus frosted head has a very "mild and appealing" look, on a snare. I can imagine how cool that looks from the drummer's side, under stage lights... :)

Dangerous territory :o .
I once had the privilege of designing my own stick. It was just perfect, and I couldn't use anything else.
They were made by a local guy, who imported Hickory dowels. He made replicas of all popular brands and models. We stocked his version of ProMark, Vater and Vic Firth in most popular models.
I sent him a stick i liked, and asked for a few mods, ie/ larger Ball Tip, slightly heavier shoulder, slightly thicker. (Perfect, at the time  ), and the perfect stick was born.
The maker of these fine sticks had Cancer, and eventually could no longer live with the pain.
His legacy was lost, machinery was purchased, but product never resurfaced. Very sad, in many ways.
However, the 26prs of sticks he made me (6weeks prior to his passing) were made from the best hickory he had ever received (this is what I was told, they were the BEST sticks ever).
But, they didn't last forever, and I was lost  .

I'm sure you're aware, but don't get too comfortable

Hey Jeff,

I remember a little of that background from us talking once before about sticks, and that is what started me 'stockpiling' my favotite stick.

Every couple of months, when I restock on heads, I order a brick (12 pairs) of my sticks, and I am now up to five bricks in stock, and one on the way. Intent is to build a lifetime supply.

Now I am afraid to stop; not so much worried about running out of sticks as I am concerned about setting too low a 'lifetime' requirement. :?

I had an interesting conversation with Greg last night, and am considering taking a few used clear G Plus to the local sandblaster to see if a consistently 'etched' finish can be created. I wouldn't mind that at all. Back in the days where bruhes were not involved, I was perfectly happy with clear snare batter heads, and If I could texture a clear enough to work, I would love it.

For the moment anyway, problem seems to be resolved. ;)

A 14 G Plus clear was mounted on a 'mule' snare drum (just to provide tension and resistance), manually sanded in an orbital patter with 60 grit paper, and removed. The result was a hazy, translucent head, with a pretty decent looking abrasion pattern on it, with mimimal material removal.

It was then fitted to one the Designer 14x8's. It seems to work very nicely with brushes, sounds as good as ever with sticks, and even looks good.

If it is still holding up after some sustained use, I am going to stockpile some of these and some sandpaper, and consider myself to have dodged a bullet.
;)

I'm always impressed by your willingness to solve problems in unexpected ways, Cliff. Is there a sonic shift from clear to sanded? Is there marketing potential? CMax Handsand Heads. CHH sounds good. I can commission the Hodan Center (local chaps with a few cylinders missing) to do the processing and packaging, adding PR value to the PC-addicted. Or should we keep it a secret?

Hey Greg,

I don't know if there is a sonic shift from the clear to the sanded, as I never used a clear G Plus as a snare batter, and I sanded this on on another drum (at minimal tension, to avoid seating it).

I guess there might be some market potential, if there are enough people around like me.

On the other hand, this whole issue came about because, apparently, not enough people liked the head I was using.

If we go forward, Hodan Center it is. No PC concerns; fire up the PR machine.

p.s. Has the Hodan Center got anything to do with the 'mineral' in Mineral Point?
