The only problem is that if a guitar with pedals, keyboards and a bass come along - they're almost useless... For a gig with more VOLUME, the inch difference matters... :)

But not if the bass drum is miked, surely?

In my experience, those gigs require a wider tone, hence a 22" bd is needed. Usually, I play unmiked, unless I'm on a stage in front of several hundred(s) of people...

But, anything is achievable today, with good mics and a good sound guy... :)

Speaking of SONOR bass drums:
I heard the recording we did with the percussion quartet. EQd and produced. My godfather (best man), who is the producer, told me "I LOVE the sound of the bass drum - the lows and the BOOOM that stays behind!!!" According to him, he recorded bass drums like this only 2 times - mine and my friend's Phonic 22"... :)

That was my point, Goki. The sound from the Designer 18", through the PA, was as satisfying as any 22 I've ever used, through an equivalent PA. Without a PA, cubic inches are needed if you want a larger sound (all other things being equal).

I have played gigs where I was mic'd and run into the "house" mix, but not onto the stage mix. Everyone out front could hear the bass drum but I could not!

Man, that has got to be annoying.

...and the more you kicked it, to try to hear it, the more he turned you down!

Definitely a Feel thing, I know this was mentioned, but not picked up on. I personally don't understand why anybody would use an 18 kick :? . The head from a drum that should be a Floor Tom feels terrible under foot. Unless you are just standing on it to stretch the head for your FLOOR TOM.

GO THE 24X18

What's the subject, depth or diameter?

Lets go with depth first:
Matters more to me than diameter.
My busy earlier years gigging I was always mic'd. Everytime. Not one of those times did I ever hear the PA over my drums. From the drivers seat, I heard my kit, and it seriously mattered how I felt and heard my kit.
This is assuming one hears a significant difference in various depths of a kick. I sure do. If you don't, then it begs the question of the depths of everything else; snare, toms

Diameter: I'm actually looking for an 18" kick in Walnut. As I'm sure I can screw a handle to it, pack my lunch in it and have a matching lunch box. With the notion I could possible have a side use for it as a bass drum if it were deep enough.

You seriously aren't taking into account the type of music and gigs involved. I'm under the impression Gregs gig is pretty low keyed with a pretty small PA.
Here's the problem with an 18" kick for me right now: Wanting/needing multiple bass drums:
Quote:
I'm still looking for a 20 for just that reason: Volume. Cubic Inches.

And I'd rather be a Premier whore than a Sonor whore. At least Premier knew when to go out of business.
