What's the subject, depth or diameter?
Lets go with depth first:
Matters more to me than diameter.
My busy earlier years gigging I was
always mic'd. Everytime. Not one of those times did I ever hear the PA over my drums. From the drivers seat, I heard my kit, and it seriously mattered how I felt and heard my kit.
This is assuming one hears a significant difference in various depths of a kick. I sure do. If you don't, then it begs the question of the depths of everything else; snare, toms
Diameter: I'm actually looking for an 18" kick in Walnut. As I'm sure I can screw a handle to it, pack my lunch in it and have a matching lunch box. With the notion I could possible have a side use for it as a bass drum if it were deep enough.
You seriously aren't taking into account the type of music and gigs involved. I'm under the impression Gregs gig is pretty low keyed with a pretty small PA.
Here's the problem with an 18" kick for me right now: Wanting/needing multiple bass drums:

I'm still looking for a 20 for just that reason: Volume. Cubic Inches.
And I'd rather be a Premier whore than a Sonor whore. At least Premier knew when to go out of business.
