Looks 80's doesn't it. I played like this for years. Hard to believe now. Everything feels out of bounds and bulky.
Kit definitely looks better without the Walt Disney tom ha

Second kick doesn't help me at all. Always look like something went seriously wrong. :?

I like it, but I also hate when drummers wuss out and use a double pedal. Either play 2 kicks or not, no pussy footing around...

Indeed - playing a double bass instead of a double pedal is a totally different feeling - first thing that comes to mind is Simon Phillips...

Two comments:

• I gotta get me one of those melodic metronomes that Simon’s got
• Holy !@#$ - that’s Lee Sklar on bass!

A very convincing argument for two of everything. None of this 'striking one drum with two limbs' stuff, eh?

Cliff, even most, if not all, of my flams are placed on 2 toms... it just sounds most powerful. ;)

Nice flam kit you've got there, Kelly.

Kidding aside, Dave, double kick make sense for a lot of reasons.

Being long slow frequency waves, splitting the generation of them to two different sources makes sense if the objective is to push inherently slow sounds out faster while retaining a degree of definition. This is consistent with the more dampened sound generally targeted in double kick and/or double pedal applications.

Interesting how drums always adapt to the genre to which they are applied. Double kicks seem to live in environments where midrange has been more fully occupied by guitars and electronics, and drums are forced to seek space in lower frequency ranges (via bigger toms and bigger kicks with more notes played on them), and higher frequency ranges (thicker, higher pitched cymbals / highly tensioned snares).

I think I see a tee shirt here: “Occupy midrange - Fire your guitarist(s)”

Kelly, I like your white kit with 3 racks, 2 floors, and a third floor to your left. I'm thinking about trying that with my new 13x8, and put it to the left side of my hi hats.
What are some of the benefits of a left side floor tom for you?
