Has anyone had the chance to measure both drums, to say which is heavier:
A maple light Designer, or a Maple shelled Hilite.

If You had a (let's say) 10" tom of the two series, which tom is heavier - the Designer or the Hilite?

Answers?!?!?

Never heard anyone talk about that.

Educated but a where-did-you-go-to-school guess: Probably very similar weights in same shell sizes. The shells are a smidgeon thinner on the Designers, but the wood is denser. Only other obvious difference is the mounting systems.

Not designed for small weights, my bathroom digital scale says the 10" Designer tom weighs 7.8 pounds. By comparison the Classix tom weighs 6.2 pounds.

As far as weight goes, after twenty years of lugging Signatures, the Designers feel very light weight to me. :D Though compared to the Classix, which will blow over in a mild breeze, the Designers are quite substantial. If this is a shipping question, much will depend upon the bass drum tom mounting system.

Goki,
I won't be able to give you an exact weight differential, numbers-wise, but I can definitely chime in about the difference "feel-wise."
Just comparing "heft" on 8/10/14 HiLites vs. Designer(maple lights) in the same sizes, the Designers are quite a bit heavier! As Greg mentioned, a lot of it probably is the mounting system on the Designers. And even though the HiLite shells themselves are thicker, Designer shells feel a lot heavier too. The Hilites feel significantly lighter when moving them around.
If you need actual numbers for shipping comparison, I can weigh/compare two 8"s in about a week.

I second the designers winning this contest, I also think it is the hardware, they are heavy!
The classix get my vote for the lightweight gigging kit, thin shells and light hardware. And really good tone!

Thanx guys - I just needed a rough answer... :)

I know that the Designer shell is thinner, but I also know that the Hilite Italian maple shell doesn't have the same density...

I was just exercising my mind, to know what to expect from Designers. I love the Hilites, but I somehow get the feeling they're very fragile... :(
That's the main reason I never went for S Classix too...

Thanks for the info...
