On drums...

Yup, one of the things I bought from NYC..

I've used it on the S Classix 14"x5" wood snare.
Put them diecast hoops back on...

And tested it yesterday.............


I LOVE the sound. It's warmer than the regular Ambassador. Since it's a 2 ply coated head, it sounds very good. Not tight like the Emperors. And indeed, it gives that "airy" sound to the snare drum, the one we used to hear on those recordings from "the days"...

As I was told, the reason they made them 2 ply back in the days was the mylar thickness. They were not able to produce a single thick ply, so they made it by using 2.....

All in all - I must say I'm completely satisfied with this head on a wood snare. I didn't test it with a regular hoop, but apparently, on the S Classix it does what I wanted - the snare sounds warmer, a bit chocked, timid when hit light and passionate when hit hard.


If one of you has the chance - try it!!!!!!!!!!
I bought it from Steve Maxwell's drum shop, for $16...

Hey Goki,

Thats is pretty much how I would describe the G Plus that I use on the Designer snares, except that I think they open up at a little lower volume.

For years, I used Emperors and G2's as snare batter heads for rock situations, so I can surely appreciate what the 2 ply does.

What if we did all have the same opinions?

I tried an Emp awhile back because I saw Virgil using one, it was just too much for me. Too stiff.
Now I want to try that emp snare side head Cliff alerted me too. That idea seems like a winner.

From what I've seen, Emperor snare side is good for snares 7" and deeper...

The vintage Ambassador has that warmth of a 2 ply head, but it's nowhere near stiff.

If one of you has a chance to experiment, you should try that...

Kel, you and I were talking about Emp snare sides on my Gretsch 5", where it makes me very happy. Never tried another head on it because I like it so well. Something Sully put on when he had it. I have been wondering what it would do for a Lite snare, but that was before I tightened up the Amb snare side.

I just tried a Remo Vintage Ambassador on my Sonor Artist Vintage Maple snare. It sounds wonderful. I tried it on my Sq2 acrylic, and didn't like it all.

I've never tried these heads before and may give them a bash. I honestly can't see by the Evans Genera HD heads on wooden snares. The Cottonwood is just incredible with it on and has that 'pop' I love. Everybody has their own sound especially with snare drums. I have almost the identical opinion on snare heads as Gunnar actually. We both seem to find (for our ears) the correct marriage of head to drum.
