On drums...

Nearly impossible to photograph inside. There is some grain that gets washed out and they are not this bright looking.
Enjoying them. 12 tom is sitting on the floor.

What if we did all have the same opinions?

I've come along with it Greg. I have it more open now, MUCH better but still experimenting. I have a felt strip behind the front head that will never sit well with me, laying across the bearing edge.
I got some of those mini-mads you were talking about. I haven't tried them yet but I am not sure they would be enough to cancel most unwanted overtones. Would like to hear your opinion.

Cliff....Ludwigs bass drum mounts were just fugly, so I went with no mount. Honestly would rather not have the rack but I have some work to do to find stands and stuff that would put the toms were I want them.
The rack toms are still sitting a little too high I see from taking off the 12 this weekend.

Min-emads on the bass drum do have an effect although small. It was all I needed to quell a small problem that began to crop up. I don't remember the details now, but I tried felt strips in various widths, locations, and tensions, I tried a PS3, I tried everything I could think of but they all muffled the drum too much.

Thus far, it's academic, since the 18 does everything I have needed it to, and it doesn't need any damping on the reso beyond what the Fiberskyn coating does.

The small pads are surprisingly effective, at least on the Designer kicks. I'm not sure I see a good spot to mount one on your bass, unless you attach it to the wood hoop. I have questions about how that would affect the finish.

Designer claws wrap over and present a flat surface on the inside of the hoop. MinEmads are designed to be attached to the outside of a rim, but they also work backwards, kinda.

For me, the only reason to damp the reso head was for miking, just for that last little bit of control over things that a mic picks up.

It seems to me that you're on a journey from what you used to like, if you are now opening your bass heads for more resonance. I find the more open I tune, the more I like open tuning, but I have never moved beyond the point of having a control ring on the batter.

I heard ya the first daym time.

I dunno Greg. I like where it is right now, but it is just not in me to leave a bass drum alone.
I know it can do better. Always can right
Besides, I am a stickler for never putting anything in a bass drum and right now the felt strip is bothering my conscience.

And it should be noted, I contribute a lot of this to my lack of tuning skills.


Oh, and I did try a fiberskyn on the batter along with the reso side. Saw some guy raving about it.
I couldn't get it to work.
