Changing out the newer tom mount to Designer so I can use Designer tom arms.
Only the knob part. The horizontal and vertical piece remain the SClass pieces.
If I could find the actual right size pieces for each drum (8, 10, 12) then the whole thing can be changed.
But this works fine, I just need two more knob assemblies.
I had told Greg they were interchangeable, but they are not if you are only changing the knob. I had to drill a small hole and cut a inch off the bracket to fit correctly on the Designer knob.
Also notice I am putting the rubber washer on the inside of the lug screws. They are also off a Designer tom. Because a Designer tom has two per lug and they were off a 15" drum I have enough to do a 8, 10 and 12.

Hey Kelly,

I am not familiar with S Class tom arms. What is the benefit of Designer arms over S Class Pro?

Will you also be using a mount plate on the kick, with the Designer tom post?

Are you going to be operational by the time we get there?

The 8 on the right has the original tom holder. It is identical to SQ2, SClassix etc. The 10 tom on the left has the Designer knob.
I never got along with the new arms and mounting. Designer arms are irresistably stable. You can see in the pics how the Designer mount has an extra area there to hold the arm steady whereas the newer mount just clamps on the post.
There seems to be no tom drop to account for with the Designer mount.
There is also a built in "stop" on the Designer. The arm doesn't poke through the top requiring memory locks for your height location.
Designer arms are MUCH thicker and MUCH better looking and the big knob is much easier to turn. Wing style stuff kills my hands.

Oops. Yes, it will be up and running. The whole change only takes a half hour. But God knows how long it will be before I find 2 more Designer knobs for the 8 and 12. So they will continue to have the original style mounts.

As far as using a Designer track mount for the kick, no. Right now the kit is on my rack so I don't need. Later to break the kit down I would like to get a Designer double tom stand. I have a clamp that would clamp the single drum to a cymbal stand.
I'm not sure if the Designer arms will fit in a newer style stand. I'll try it later.

Kel, you and I actually have the same experiences with both mounts...and totally divergent opinions!  . I find the Pro/Classix mount a lot more "user friendly" and its much easier for me to use. That "built in stop" on the Designer mount has caused me endless amounts of frustration. I have to mess with the angle I'm mounting the drum as I'm putting it on the arm, tilting it etc. You're right there isn't any tom drop to account for, like there is with the Pro/Classix mount. But I get around that okay by adjusting the angle of the arm. And the knob on the Designer mount gives me fits!

They absolutely will. I mix and match them fairly frequently.

Your project looks really killer, by the way. I've always been fond of black S Class Pros.... Maybe I should get some.

Hey Kelly,

Makes sense, and now that you have refreshed memory, I think I recall a discussion covering a lot of this once before at Scott's.

Is it just an illusion caused by the angle the photo was taken at, or is the bottom of the 'T' arm on the 10" touching the ground? How do you get a bottom head and rim on that?

p.s. Are you still using Emperor batters? I have that brand new 14" that you sent on the Signature floor tom that I'll bring back when I come. I'll never use it.

That's an illusion Cliff. It sits exactly where it does on the original. Those vertical pieces are all the same size in this series. So the smaller the drum, the closer to the edge it goes.

Edit: The rubber stop I made for it is wider probably making it look closer. I will eventually shrink it down when I find something more suitable but assembled it's working fine for right now.

I'm going to get Greg or someone with a single lug Designer tom to measure lug center to lug center. If that matches up, an entire Designer mount can be installed. The horizontal pieces are identical to Designers. Would just need the right sizes of each drum to replace.
Single lug or double lug,, does not matter. The Designer lug and SClass Pro lug where the "H" pieces mount are identical.

Edit: ignore that screw there at the bottom. It is just temporary to hold that rubber stop. I was undecided whether I was going to attach to the shell there but now I will wait to see if an entire mount will fit.

Why single lug?

Because I don't know if there is a difference in single lug and double lug hole location. I would think not.
But if the single lug hole is the same as mine I see a couple single lug orphans on the market I can steal parts from.
