Have anyone played those?
Any comments on what to expect?

I'm planning to combine them with a 12" Dark Splash, 16" Dark Crash and 18" Flat top Ride (all K Custom)...

Info is more than appreciated, and if You happen to see something cheap (bellow$200) on the block in the future, let me know... :)

I have a set of the 14" ones and they sound great, but I have had them for 15 years and they are dirty and smelly......which is why they sound so good

I'm sure that an aged cymbal ALWAYS sounds better...

I've been to the zildjian site - there's a significant difference between the 13" K Custom and the 14" K...

So, it looks like I'll need to start saving...

Anyone else here been using 13" hihats?!?

I haven't, Goki, in part because the smaller the cymbals the tighter the setup needs to be... and the smaller the target becomes.

What sound shift are you looking for?

I'm not looking for a sound shift Gregory...

I started selling stuff I don't need - and I thought that reinvesting the money from a CROWN CM311A mic would be a good idea...
I have yet to find a buyer here, though. But I'm sure my singing AND drumming days (at the same time) are over. For 2-3 songs a night, I can use whatever mic there is...

So, the only logical idea is to sell - too bad I used the mic only 3-4 times. The blues band split and I was left with a $350 mic. If I can get $200 for it back here, it would be perfect... :(

The cymbals I got from Cliff (16 and 18 K Customs) are great, but somehow they don't blend that well with the 14" hihat. Or at least I think that's the case.
And when the idea to sell some unneeded stuff appeared - the first thing in my mind was a K Custom hihat. I have a 14" K (tahnx to Cliff), so a 13" K Custom would be different both in size and sound...

All this is daydreaming UNTIL I sell the mic, though...

Hey Goki,

I agree that your 18" K Custom Flat ride and 16" K Custom Dark Crash don't work all that well with the K hats.

I am not much in love with the K Custom Dark Hats I have played, and I am not nuch of a fan of 13" hats either.

I don't know for sure what the appeal of 13" hats is for you, but what I don't like about them is that they are a 14% reduction in area (and assuming the same thichness, a like reduction in mass), and in order to get a solid 'chick' sound, they weight needs to increase.

All else equal, smaller cymbals are higher pitched. All else equal, heavier cymbals are higher pitched. Those both go away from what I want hats to sound like.

I would suggest taking a look at 14" Constantinoples as a good fit with your 16" and 18". They are much softer than the K's, and might be a good option for you to have.

I am not too familiar with what you have Goki, but I have always liked the 13" K/Z hats offered by Zildjian. I am yet to own a set though.

I do have a 14" Oriental trash hat top paired with a Z bottom that sounds good. On the lines of the K/Z....

I would give that a try Cliff, simply because a friend back here has a set of 14" K Constantinople hihats... But, I doubt I would be able to find a pair that is cheap...
I've been offered a pair of 13" K for $180, but I also doubt I will get them. It's the tone color of the K that is different than the K Custom, not the note...

Thanks for the suggestion once again Cliff - I'll try the idea for sure...

Latzanimal - other people said that a K/Z combo is a winner, but to me they sounded brighter and more aggressive...

I swore I would never have a use for 13 hats. Up until about 6 months ago, tried them and became completely addicted to them. Love them. Nowhere near what I thought in my head they would be like.
About Christmas time, a friends son got his first beginner drum kit for Christmas and the folks couldn't afford hats.
So, I am currently shopping and saving (in that order) for another set. Really looking forward to it again.

Wish I could be smarter about this conversation, but it seems clear that if you are limited in choices, then choose the option that sounds best to you and let the other issues fall where they might. If I had unlimited funds, I would probably have pair of 12s stashed away... because I like them for some things, and might have a use one day. But all around, 14s seem to fall into a good zone.

Now, which 14s is another matter completely. Of the very limited selection of K Custom darks I have heard, the 13 has the edge. I wouldn't let the size worry me.
