I was just wondering - is there an easy way to clean all that brush/stick marks on coated heads?

I just had a cocktail gig with the band, and had to use brushes 80% of the time. Now the snare and the toms are a real mess... :S

Any ideas?!?

I know that when I put the snare on the S Classix, I'll immediately "infect" the tom heads. And I hate to see that happen...

I always thought heads that showed use were a sign of use... I mean, a sign that the drums were being used. Clean heads are fun as long as they're brand new, and then the badge of use sets in.

I guess if you don't like it, try some warm water and mild soap. Should pick up any dirt that isn't grease based.

Thanks Greg - I'll try that...

The problem happens when playing brushes - when I switch to rimshots (with sticks) - my hand picks up all that dirt on the head (from the brush).
Pretty ugly if someone wants to talk to You during the break, and stops You on the way to the toilet...

Otherwise - a clean head is a sign that I didn't practice much... :D

Metal workers get filthy.

You can switch to nylon but the sound isn't as good. 8-)

Scratch the "rimshots" and put cross-sticking instead...

Okay, scratched and inserted. Still left wondering; are you planning a little washing ceremony before each cross-sticking episode, or will you be satisfied to clean the heads at home? Doesn't solve the spooky hands in the toilet dilemma.

 Perhaps a finger bowl, or a moist towelette, for before you go on break?

I like the idea of a finger bowl Gregory. It'll certainly put a touch of class for the gig...

I just cleaned the head with a sponge/water. It worked well.

Sorry for the rant guys, but I use brushes very little, and the Steve Gadd model made a real mess. :(
I don't have this problem when using old Ludwig jazz brushes from the 70s.

Wash the brushes out, too.

It is the oil on them that makes the mess.

Thanks for the advice Cliff :)

I suspected they were coated with something that left all that gray coating on the head... :S

I was wondering about that. The manufacturer would coat them to keep them from rusting.

Try dipping them in acetone.
