Hi Guys,
The veiled lie as it were ("We didn't actually say it was genuine") is despicable, and then to justify the lie with bogus environmental concerns along with economic concerns, (after the truth comes out) is immoral.
Just My Opinion,

I too am against that marketing trick (which by the way is widely used in my country) - if we didn't say anything You'll think it's GENUINE, but You can't sue us when You realize it's not, because we didn't say anything...

That's just a marketing trick - and people who pay $4-5K per drum set need to know everything. Like that defect in the lacquered sparkle finishes (with cracks appearing out of nowhere) - did SONOR fix that, or do cracks still appear after several years?!? I remember the Hilites having the same problem, and SONOR guys admitted it was the chemical formula of the lacquer that caused this anomaly...

Yes, Goki, the sins of omission. :(

It could be argued that it goes a little past a marketing trick when the answer to a direct question is the wrong answer. It is remarkable (and consequential) that the US distributor had the wrong information - and that is awarding the benefit of the doubt.

Wood is the issue. There are many good reasons to use engineered wood and I applaud them all. But the value placed upon wood echoes the human connection to nature. This sort of thing won't matter much to those who don't experience empathy with wood, and I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade -but for those of us who find the most intimate relationship with nature in trees, man-made imitation wood is a cold substitute.

It ought to be interesting to see what divergence in valuation, if any, in the re-sale market opens up between (i) real and faux veneer products, and, (ii) periods of manufacture.

I take the risk of prediction: The collector community is fairly small and is generally wood oriented, and Link era stuff will rise as a result. Current wood-grained sales will tank and resale values drop through the floor - along with Sonor's reputation. The high-end wood veneer kit was their main sales tool.

My opinion on the subject: Won't affect anything in any way shape or form. The Sonor faithful will accept it as "brilliant" and "the best on the planet".
Link era drums are seriously outdated except to the collector. And collectors will only pay so much no matter what it is. The prices will not rise.
I think the "player" crowd is much larger and you would think ever outgrowing the collector crowd, which will lead to "who makes the best manufactured veneer". And of course the answer to that is obvious in the world of Sonor.
You cannot strip a believer of his beliefs. He will die defending them or else face the daunting task of coming to terms with having been duped.

For the record, the Sonor museum makes up very little bottom dollar for the cash machine Sonor the company has become. Sure they might throw them a bone but bottom line is, they don't really care.

Well, true to form, (and fitting the title of this thread) the quest for understanding and knowledge over there is officially over-The thread was locked and it's just a matter of time before the thread disappears completely. Such a shame...

But everybody is happy again!

Ah, well. But one thing is clear: shutting it down doesn't work. Someone is going to trip over the lump under the carpet.

Greg and I had talked a bit before even opening this topic, and we both felt that it would not be improper to extend the discussion of the topic, per se, over here.

Since this place was set up, I don’t think there has been an example of anyone using this forum to comment on any other forum, or the administration thereof, and we felt that everyone here would understand the line between (i) commenting on the topic per se, and, (ii) commenting on the forum itself.

Let’s be sure not to cross that line.

Still, there is a definitely a lump under the rug that won't go away.

There were some interesting wood 'finishes' (we now learn they're called) in the old days. Here's a Slingerland Radio King beaut, contact paper with lacquer coating:
