Those were his custom-made Rogers XP8s. They burned in a storage fire sometime in the late 80s, if I am recalling correctly.

Interestingly, Rogers was owned by CBS from 1966ish to 1984 (as was Fender and Rhodes) and their factory was in Fullerton, CA-shared with the Fender factory. A cool result of that shared factory are some cool looking Big R and XP8 drums finished in "Tobacco Sun Burst" (TSB). This is exactly the same colors as Fender's 3-Tone Sunburst. The Fender finish team came over and taught the Rogers guys how to shoot it!

That last hurrah for Rogers-the 79-83 XP8 era, is not the most documented era but it is arguably the finest line of drums and hardware they produced. I (and anyone else within earshot) are constantly blown away by them.

Gorgeous Drum! I've always loved the late Swivos and XP8 drums. The very first professional kit I ever played was my childhood friend's brand new 1975 Londoner 5 Butcher Block swivo kit with a metal Dynasonic.
That sunburst finish was right before the end for Rogers. I would have loved to have a set of those back then. I was a young man fighting my way through a bad economic recession with a set of Pearl Maxwin (pre-Exports) toms and bass drum, with a Sonor Ferro 6 1/2 x 14 snare drum and used Zildjians!
Cheers,
Brian
