On drums...

I'm into the 'Each to his Own' theory. Some drive Nice Cars, some collect stuff.
At the moment I'm collecting some drums for the purpose of having all bases covered for my studio.
Top of the line (Non Asian) Drums are extremely rare, but Pro gear can be found quite cheap, and I'm fortunate enough to work in a shop that takes Trade-ins, and buys Outright.
And I can't help myself . With my 'Wheeling and Dealing' , I manage to shuffle things thru, and end up with gear for nothing, or even make a little extra cash. It has cost me money, I borrowed 5k @ 16yrs old (1st year Carpentry Apprentice) to buy a massive Tama kit. When I was 21 playing Metal, I got another 5k loan for a double kick Mapex Orion kit. So theres 10k, and as you guys know, when its been 25yrs of playing, theres a shit load more than that. But its my thing, and I drive a shitty old 92 Toyota Corolla .
The idea (so I tell myself ), is to have extensive options available for studio work.
I'll now have Heavy and Light shells in Birch,Maple and Beech. Well , not super light in Beech, but plenty of options, somewhat restricted in sizes (for hire/rental purposes), but I only play a 4pce, so its all good for me , and I think I could sort out most guys.

I wish I had a few g's laying around. There are SClass Pro kits in Grained Maple coming out of the woodwork. There are at least 5 kits up right now.
I said a few years ago that they are the sleeper kit of the century. I believe one day they will be sought after. Unless of course they stay sleeping.
Not that that inspires me. I just love playng them. Most comfortable kit I've ever been behind.
I don't know about recording Jeff, some of the guys have some great sounding videos on youtube, but live they can't be beat in my book.
Keep us posted.

For the record, don't think there are many that have had more kits on a given day than me. Didn't really enjoy it then either but it took realizing that. And that came with age, family, mortgages etc...the upkeep, maintenance is ridiculous. And sure enough I always favored one of the kits and played that one anyway.
And I'm not driving a 92 toyota anything!

I had to laugh.

I was in a crowd when a woman I know said, "The trouble starts when you buy more than one wheel." Trying to take suitable photos to add to a story Lily is writing, I was giving more attention to the scene around me than to her. "What?" I said. "More than one wheel," she came back. I stopped taking pictures and gave her a quizzical look.

"Spinning wheels," she said, waving her hands. Sometimes I wonder if women could talk if they didn't have hands to wave. "There's no trouble when you have one spinning wheel, but everyone says as soon as you get the second one, that's when you suddenly start collecting wheels."

"Why do you want more than one wheel?"

"Because they do different things," she said, hands straight out, arms suddenly gone rigid, as if crucified. I started laughing, and I'm afraid she may have thought I was being rude.

Jeff, Remembering a long ago thread, comparing live and recorded drum sound: According to the author, it was very difficult to hear any difference in recorded sound using close-mic techniques. That seems a bit surprising, but I guess heads do sound like heads, while the shells fill the room with different characteristics.

My theory is the majority of guys wanting to use the studio will be the type that 'listen with their eyes' .

Teenagers and guys in their early 20's, covered in tattoo's and NOT into dynamics. Lots of options, lots of big shiny things .

"I bet that big Red one 'goes alright', imagine how fast I can play on that".


Just picked up the S Class Pro kit Seller did think the shells were Maple/Birch, but mate, he's got a big Pearl kit, and doesn't need the Sonor.
All is pretty much perfect condition except 1 good ding on the top of the kick , but thats about it. Gorgeous this high gloss Grained Maple.
All good with German specs= Vertical Grain, 17.5 deep kick, T-Bar is attached at base (block is cylindrical, not pointed) 0405 inside all shells.
Kick and Floor Tom inner look exactly like a Designer, the 13 almost looks like my HiLite .
