Yesterday I received the rosewood Phonic 516 reissue that had been for sale on the museum. Thanks and a tip of the hat to Mike for a very pleasant deal and for the great effort made to successfully get it here safely and quickly.
Gotta love it when a drum arrives and it is exactly what you expect, and sounds exactly as expected.
Not the warmth of my maple light Designer of the same size, but a little dryer, with a distinct ‘crack’ when laid into even moderately.
I got to play with it a bit last night, and am truly enjoying it.
Does this qualify as a 'Link era drum' or not? Dunno. Cool, Cliff. I had a Phonic snare and I loved it, but since I was playing it quite hard, it tended to detune. Don't have much a problem now, with either the Sig or Lite. I suppose one could query the issue of the quality of wood between Link and later drums, and one could niggle about the throw-off, but otherwise, that drum should sound like a Link Phonic.
