Hey Gaz,
Tell me a bit about the cymbal change.
Did you just one day decide that you were looking for a different sound, and make a complete change, and how did you land on Sabian?
Do you use different set-up for different things, or is this a complete change of 'cymbal personality'?
The biggest problem I found with Paiste was availability. I spent almost a year trying out cymbals; even to the point of dropping into drum stores when I took the wife away on vacations.
What first started me thinking of Sabian, as opposed to Zildjian, were two unrelated incidents. The first, was playing a pair of 13" AAX X-celerator hats I tried on a whim against my 13" 2002 S/E's. Secondly, I emailed Sabian about getting information on what they currently had available, which ended up with me on the phone with Peter Stairs for almost two hours regarding my requirements.
Nevertheless, the clincher for me was my first rehearsal with some trial AAX-plosion crashes; after running through one track, Art, our guitarist (And swearing is something I have never heard him do) just blurted out 'F**king hell!! They are loud'.
As for set up; again after chatting to Peter and Kevin Laskey, I have ended up with a collection that covers most genre's. I have to admit, the people at Sabian have been great with everything I've thrown at them, and have been far more helpful than I expected them to be.
