I just picked both up, and you are right; the 600 is a good bit lighter, but not so much lighter that I would buy it for that reason alone. Unlike cymbal stands which (except for certain awkward set-up situations) require little more than vertical stability, hat stands can see some very interesting forces, and as such require a bit of bulk for torsional as well as vertical stress.
Obviously, you might be willing to sacrifice a bit of durability (as in long range, not short term where the piece falls apart while you're playing) for weight. I think much of the drum hardware weight is just hardware fetish rather than practical consideration. Most folks are not planning to hang from their cymbal stands. I like the flat leg DW stands generally, and that DW 6500 weighing in at 5 lbs. might be a good piece, assuming you play on fairly flat ground!
