Switched the floor tom batter from a Vintage Modern to a coated G1 and tuned the drum down, tuned the bass reso up, replaced the Vintage Modern snare batter with a Fiberskyn Diplomat, and now it's almost perfect.

My only complaint is that the bass packs such a punch that, on rare occasions, I don't use enough foot power and drop the note. It's more a nuisance to me than a surprise to anyone else, but the Designer 18 is so good about playing quietly and it has spoiled me.

Well, I haven't been put to the test in quite this way, in a very long time, with the Designers. My memory on it is softer than the softest pedal, but I do recall having the problem on many other kits and pedals, but not on the Ds.

I had a rub up with a fellow who wanted to know "What was the big cannon noise in that last song?" I knew what he was talking about, because I was only hitting every other measure, a snare pop on 4, a solid open bass note and flat-ride crash :o on the following 1, played real slow, like at 54 bpm. "Where were you when you heard this cannon?" I asked. "Against the back wall," he said.
